Animal Processing Workshop 2025
“The workshop was so fascinating, I learned so much in one day, and was so surprised by the fact that I wasn’t squeamish, or grossed out. It was really quite beautiful in fact.” - Animal Processing workshop participant 2025
On a wild whim I signed up for the Animal Processing workshop hosted by Thriving Roots at Cedar Song on May 31. I had always wanted to learn more about the process and imagined helping my students when they go hunting next year. I was a bit nervous about how I might feel and what I might encounter as I have zero previous experience…
The experience went above and beyond my expectations as Erik, and his brother, Amos, created a space where all of us- age 8-61 felt like we were part of a sacred act. The animals were killed with respect and care. One participant said a prayer, two others sang a song. Erik and his brother demonstrated such care and reverence for the lives given as well as a joy to butcher, make sausage and share food.
Each participant was invited to take part in all aspects of the process and were encouraged to do what they felt comfortable with. The area was set up for our comfort with a large tarp, circle and fire and all tools were provided so we could cut with confidence. If you have ever wanted to learn more about how to process animals for your own farm or to help others or just for your own understanding consider this marvellous offering.
With gratitude,
Karla Ryan - Animal Processing workshop participant 2025
